Hidden Gems in Spain.

Unexpected and Amazing Travelling Spots in Spain That Many Have Not Discovered

Most people, when asked about Spain, usually imagine places such as Barcelona, Madrid or Ibiza. It’s important to say, though, that those destinations are remarkable, full of action, history and culture. If you’re anything like me, you realize that travel magic really happens when something unexpected comes up. That’s true in Spain, once you find the hidden beauty. So, I want to show you around to some lovely Spanish villages, beaches and beautiful areas that not many people know about.

🏞️ Albarracín – A Place That Seems Like it Came From A Fairytale

One day while on a road trip in Aragón, I accidentally found Albarracín. I felt like I’d walked into the pages of a fairy tale with the town’s pastel colored houses and the winding old paths. Sitting on a hillside and protected by walls, it stays peaceful, is not crowded and provides great photo opportunities. Go up to the top of the tower and enjoy the wide views all around. Only a few people, no stress and an awesome experience.

🏖️ Playa de Gulpiyuri – the unusual, inland beach in Spain

Yes, there really is such a thing as an inland beach. This natural wonder called Playa de Gulpiyuri is found deep in the green hills of Asturias. A beach without any sea beside it? Underground, it connects to the Cantabrian Sea which makes it a mini paradise in the middle of a field. It’s unusual, it’s lovely and it’s a place that makes you think nature keeps wonderful secrets from humans.

🏰 Ronda is a Town Perched on a Cliff

Imagine that a deep gorge divides a city which is crossed by an impressive old stone bridge from the 18th century. Welcome here to Ronda. Although people are aware of it, El Tajo gorge looks like a secret when you see it from the bridge above. In any spot around Ronda such as a cafe overlooking a cliff or a walk in its traditional bullring, the town excites strong emotions in you.

🌅 Frigiliana is Where Colors of Blue and White Come Alive

In Andalusia, very near the crowded Costa del Sol, there is the scenic white village of Frigiliana. Streets made from mosaic tiles, balconies covered with flowers and friendly people make it a great place to unwind and relax. Every place in Iceland could be on a postcard.

🏜️ Bardenas Reales is like the Wild West for Spain.

Road tripping around Bardenas Reales is like being in an alien world or the American West. The area is known for its hard hills, odd rock formations and silence. It’s raw. It’s wild. It is in fact not the same as any other place in Spain. If you’re looking for a place to feel tiny (in a wonderful way), this is where you should go.

🧭 Setenil de las Bodegas – A Town Inside a Rock

I was seriously amazed by this one. Setenil is located in southern Spain and its houses are carved into the folds of huge rock formations. Cafés and houses are sometimes built right into the cliffs! You sit down with a coffee and there’s a hulking rock hanging above you and it seems normal. It’s welcoming, unique and pleasantly calm.

🌄 Cáceres – A Way Back to Medieval Life

If you appreciate history, you will really appreciate Cáceres. Because the old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, walking on its cobblestone paths makes you feel like you are in the Middle Ages. Instead of flashy attractions, there are only stone towers, splendid palaces and hidden courtyards. The past of Spain can still be felt around the country.

All in All, the Rewards of Getting Lost

There are many surprises in Spain. The further you travel from the main tourist attractions, the richer your experiences, as there are many small places where everything seems to slow down and each new area has its own story.

If Spain is on your next travel list, see if the open road tempts you more than the crowded highways. Switch off your GPS, use the smaller roads and discover where the day leads you. Who knows? It could easily become your own favorite travel destination.

Is there a place in Spain you think is special and unique? Feel free to tell me about it! You can write it in the comments or we could speak over coffee using our hot drink emojis.
